Meeting Minutes- November 16, 2015

Hello All-

Below you will find the minutes from our Talent Development Meeting.

The talent development staff held an informational meeting for parents on Monday, November 16, 2015. This meeting was the first of two meetings that will take place in the 2015-16 school year. The second meeting will take place during the second semester. The date will be communicated via school newsletters, Skyward, and the WUSD Talent Development Blog.

Discussed at the meeting were current initiatives within the talent development program. Some of these include: professional development in the area of differentiation, flexible grouping, cluster grouping, modified curriculum, and pretesting students. Learning how to best use the data we collect is also a focus for us this year.

Developing an efficient system of alerting teachers to future students who may need curriculum modification is also something the TD staff would like to accomplish this year.

Also discussed at this meeting was the definition of talent development. ALL kids have talents. Some are talented in one or many of the following areas: academics, arts, athletics, etc. Our job is to identify students within the grade level population who cannot have their needs met within the regular grade core curriculum. When this happens, students need DIFFERENT instruction and work. (Not more of the same or in addition to work they already know…) Although this looks slightly different for different grade levels and teams, staff will generally work to meet the needs of these students in the regular classroom.   Talent development is NOT: looking for kids who behave, playing favorites to students, or creating an elite group of students. The goal of talent development is to make sure all students are engaged in a rigorous and relevant curriculum.
Concerns raised at this meeting focused around meeting the needs of advanced learners; particularly in the area of ELA. The district talent development resource teacher would be meeting with grade level teams at the elementary and middle school level to discuss possible ways we can meet the needs of our advanced ELA students.

The use of intervention block time was mentioned. (FIT/WIN time) The response to this concern was that FIT/WIN time is constantly being evaluated and changed based on the needs of the population. We are looking for ways to offer enrichment opportunities during these times.
